Tonight we went to Barrio. It's been open for about a year and has gotten ridiculously popular with d-bags/fratholes/sohos. Sunday, however, seemed like a reasonably safe night to try it out. We were hella hungry and nothing we'd had before was sounding good for one reason or another. Barrio is about half a mile from our apartment.
We'll be breaking this down item by item. First, the Cobra Verde:
I was mostly drinking the Macho Camacho. A margarita made with blood orange and ancho chile infused 1800, this was more fruity than anything. Tasty, not terribly potent, but definitely tasty. I may go with something else next time.
Crab empanadas were pretty nice. Crunchy on the outside, tasty on the inside, I'm no food critic so I won't be able to get terribly far into describing the flavors. Most notable about these was that they were topped with some freaking delicious fresh avocado slices. Fresh avocado slices with a little salt on them are an excellent thing and seriously under-used.
The tequila cured salmon was Summer's. I didn't get too much detail from her as to what the flavors were, but it wss definitely "a girl plate" due to the not insignificant piles of greens interspersed between the slices of cured salmon.
The special taco: this was a pretty special taco, definitely. The taco was filled with medium to medium-rare steak, fried onions, and sliced sauteed chiles. Much flavor, reasonably burninating as well when I caught a chile on the right part of my tongue.
Carnitas tacos were served topped with a pretty excellent green salsa. It definitely tasted green but was not lacking in punch and was a bit higher in vinegar-ish flavor than I'm used to in a green sauce. Solidly tasty.
Chorizo Enchilada: THIS was impressively tasty. A deep red chile-chorizo blend, with some degree of tortilla, topped by an over-easy egg, topped with sliced radish and fresh jalapeno. The fried egg added an interesting contrast to the red chile/chorizo onslaught; the yolk was a particularly refreshing swerve. Overall, quite rich in flavor and nicely varied in texture. Definitely getting another one of these in the future.
1 GUACAMOLE: fresh guac with good house-made tortilla chips; the guacamole was quite chunky and flavorful and again nicely topped with slices of fresh jalapeno.
1 CHICKEN ENCHILAD(A): Pretty tasty, but by the point that I was eating this my sense of taste had been fairly beaten by the level of booze in my system. Can't articulate anything beyond that it tasted pretty good when I was a bit sloshed.
1 Patron Repo & 1 RIEBEL KNIEVEL: Wasn't actually the Riebel Knievel with this one but the "Night of the Iguana" compadre. The Patron reposado was, well, Patron reposado. A tasty and smooth tequila. The Night of the Iguana was allegedly iced coffee and sherry, but from what I could see at the bar from where I was, the mixture appeared to be more Kahlua, cream, and sherry, shaken in ice. Provided a sweet contrast to the punch of the tequila shot and closed out the meal quite nicely.
